The first Folk Contraption was performed in the Vault Festival 16th-19th Feb 2012. Rogues' Gallery are developing the event for the summer festival circuit, in London and beyond. Part-gig, part play, The Folk Contraption takes the city as its starting point looking through the lens of folk stories and music. Ballad, the main outcome for my Sky Arts fund Bursary, grows out of The Folk Contraption. See the audio taster next in the portfolio for more details.

About me

Hello, I'm Oli. I’m a freelance theatre director and the artistic director of Rogues’ Gallery Theatre company. I'm currently the Associate Director of Shakespeare in Love directed by Declan Donnellan. Coming up for Rogues' Gallery is the Incredible One Man Pandemic at the VAULT festival. Most recently for IdeasTap I directed a rehearsed reading of Tristan Bernays' Old Fools with Paul Hilton and Hermione Gulliver at the IdeasTap Takeover:Love Festival.

Last year I made a site-responsive version of John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress up in a church space in Muswell Hill. I was the Associate Director to Ed Hall on Chariots of Fire at Hampstead Theatre and then the Gielgud. I also assisted Ed on Loyalty, Mike Leigh on Ecstasy, Richard Eyre on Last of the Duchess and Melly Still on Beasts and Beauties, all of which were at Hampstead Theatre.

Last year for Rogues’ Gallery I directed the Folk Contraption as part of the Vault Festival at the Old Vic Vaults, then we made it again afresh for the Spiegeltent on Southbank and then made yet another different Folk Contraption for Latitude. It was sort of part-play, part gig. We also made a one-man show written and starring comedian John-Luke Roberts.

Rogues’ Gallery makes an eclectic mixture of theatre, usually site-responsive and always with a unique audience experience firmly in mind. We work with the broadest range of artists possible, believing that it’s often those who belong to artistic disciplines outside of theatre itself can have the most unusual impact on a piece of work.
