"Why opium? That’s why. And why the opium den? The answer to that can be expressed in one word: romance. Visions of dark, brocade-curtained, velvet-cushioned places of luxurious decadence, filled with the mingled smoke and scents of burning joss sticks and the celestial, forbidden, fabulous stuff itself. Wordless, kowtowing servants. Timelessness. Sanctuary. Lovely loosened limbs draped from the high-slit cheongsams of recumbent exotic concubines of sweet intoxication. Dreams within dreams. Romance. Yes, I was born to smoke opium, born to smoke it in an opium den" ..... "I approach the regulation rickety slat stairs, ascend one step, and I can smell it: the most lovely smell on earth. At the top of the rickety stairs is a rickety door. Above the door is nailed a piece of wood painted with the image of a protective spirit-creature, sword in mouth, beneath the octagonal symbol of the Chinese Eight Trigrams. I knock, then knock again. The head and shirtless upper body of a young man protrude from the window to my left, waving me in. I enter a dark room at the far side of which is an altar in shambles. The shirtless young man appears, beckons me up a step...

About me

I am a self-trained photographer and filmmaker recently graduated from the University of Cambridge, although I spent more time in the dark room than the library.

I've always been artistic in one respect or another; drawing, painting, sculpting, illustrating; and in my late teens I started working as painter - primarily in portraits and nudes - to earn some extra money alongside school. I finished A levels and had my heart set on going to Central St Martins to study fine art, but i was advised to look into taking an academic degree, and my teachers suggested Geography at Cambridge. I applied as a shot in the dark, got in, and after that art school became an impossibility.

In retrospect, I realise that going to Cambridge was a huge blessing in disguise. In my first year I went on a charity fundraising trip called RAG Jailbreak, requiring me to get as far away from Cambridge in 36 hours without any money. I got to Estonia, and while wandering around the town before flying home I stumbled across a flea market, where an old man was selling mounds of old Soviet cameras. I bought what turned out to be a Fed 3 rangefinder 35mm camera, and the rest is history.

Since then I have obsessed about photography, learning feverishly about anything I can get my hands on. Within a few months of my first haphazard and often disastrous films being developed, I was approached and offered my first exhibition. 'Epson presents Cambridge Faces' was a two day exhibition across the Fitzwilliam Museum and the Cambridge Union Society, the black tie opening gala hosted 450 paying guests and was featured in Tatler magazine, the exhibition itself was also covered in Photography Monthly and Photographer magazines. Cambridge's Varsity Newspaper also picked me as one of their 'Cambridge Faces to Watch' following the exhibition. Following our success at the exhibition, I teamed up with another of the exhibitors Thurstan Redding, and we formed a number of new projects together. We were commissioned by Varsity for 16 separate fashion editorials, and more recently were given a 15 page editorial in the brand new LadyBeard Magazine, as well as the cover image for the very first issue. Thurstan and I founded a new portraiture feature of Varsity magazine called 'The Days: Cambridge', shooting prominent groups and individuals in Cambridge, and is currently the most viewed section of the magazine.

Last summer was my first foray into film, working on the More Films production of their Tales Trilogy. I was brought on as the production stills photographer, bit also worked as a Spark, and then as a camera assistant across two of the films. The experience of the set refocused all of my love and obsession for stills into the world of cinema. I have spent the last few months making short promo videos for plays, and more recently a more ambitious short art film-cum-trailer for a novel exhibition/curating experience in Cambridge.

My new focus is as Producer and Director of Photography on short film currently in pre-production, collaborating with a vibrant and talented young crew. Based on a short story written by Rudyard Kipling as part of his set of 'Plain Tales From the Hills', 'The Gate of The Hundred Sorrows' follows the story of a young man's decent into the eccentric and eclectic world of a Calcutta opium den.
