About me

Trained Script Reader with Northwest Vision & Media and founder of charity, The Homeless Film Festival. I work with homeless people to develop stories and write short films. My colleagues shoot the films that the homeless people write, and we screen them in cinemas nationwide alongside major feature films in a bi-annual film festival. The project has become an international one and helped me build a network with filmmakers from all over the world.

I have written several short films under commission, and am a full member of the Writers' Guild of Great Britain. I also founded filmmaking collective Donkey Stone Films (http://www.donkeystonefilms.com/), and through this have taught storytelling and screenwriting workshops in schools and community groups throughout the UK. This has given me extensive experience in Script Reading and Script Editing, as well as Writing and Project Management.

I am on the committee for the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain, London & South-East branch. In this role I organise and speak at events for writers in the London & SE region.

I also write radio plays, short stories, and journalistic pieces. Two of my radio plays have been selected for readings at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, and my short stories have been published by 88 Tales Press. I have worked as an arts and culture journalist, contributing book reviews, film reviews, previews of writing events, and interviews with renowned film & literary figures.

I am an avid folklore enthusiast and have collected a large catalogue of intriguing folk tales from all over the world. I take a lot of inspiration from such rare and unusual stories.

My first book, "Dead Men's Teeth", was funded by the Arts Council, and backed by the British Library, Spread the Word, and the Writers' Guild. It was published as an ebook and paperback in October 2014 by Mardibooks and is a collection of short historical fiction tales inspired by the British Library archive collections. • "Dear Jamie

I understand that you are involved in The Homeless Film Festival. I believe therefore that this might be of interest to you.

I would like your help in publicising the plight of my dear friend, Daisy-May Hudson, First Class Graduate from the University of Manchester, filmmaker, and homeless person.

On 12th July 2013, Daisy, her mother and her sister became homeless. They were evicted from their home of 13 years as their landlord Tesco, had decided to sell. Unable to afford alternative accommodation, they became homeless and have been living in temporary accommodation ever since, awaiting Council help.

Daisy, shocked by everything that had happened, decided to record the experience on her camera, as evidence, in hope of exposing the plight of those who suffer through circumstances beyond their control. I, along with two other friends, have decided to help make this film into something tangible, not only to help support her through difficult times but also because we believe this is a story which needs to be told. This film will provide a rare insight into the experiences of one victim of the current system, in an attempt to put a human face to the statistics behind Britain’s huge housing crisis. Daisy and her family as articulate hardworking people confound the stereotypes of homeless people and as such are able to articulate the realities in a way that we hope might help instigate some sort of social change.

You can help us spread Daisy’s story.

We are looking for anything from as little as a retweet, or speaking at one of our events, all the way to full collaboration with us in order to promote our film, and all it represents.

We don't have much money, as recent graduates and unestablished filmmakers and producers, however, we believe this story needs to be told.

Please do contact me if you need any more information or if you can offer any help or advice.

If you need any more information, our twitter is @halfwaydocu and our Facebook url is https://www.facebook.com/halfwaydocu. Our website is currently being built. In addition to this, Daisy has written an article on Vice Magazine about her struggles. Take a read: http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/hidden-homelessness-daisy-may-hudson.

Thank you for your time, and I do hope you can help us in changing the injustices that have caused such a dark time for my dear friend.

    Kind regards

    Alice Hughes

  • "Dear James,

I am writing to enquire whether I could volunteer in the homeless film festival.
I am a composer and I will write some music for a dance performance and a script for the same performance. The script will attach readers and actors to accurate the dance performance as well as with the music. I would like to outline a discussion for the homeless film festival. I could write some music or assist with the filming as I have volunteered in a live theatre and I have experience in the shootings.
My email address is vou34@hotmail.co.uk. Let me know whether you need a volunteer for the film festival.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon!

    Best Regards,
    Kostas

    • Hi Kostas,

It sounds like you have some very interesting skills and experience! I am not looking for volunteers at the moment as we are just coming to the end of a project. I will definitely keep your details and bear you in mind for future projects that I need volunteers for.
Thanks very much for getting in touch and offering to help out!
Hope to see you at future IdeasTap events.
