Akram Khan is a dancer, choreographer and Artistic Director of the award-winning Akram Khan Dance Company, which he established in 2000 with producer Farooq Chaudhry.
Khan's work is influenced by his Bangladeshi roots and by his training in the classical Indian dance, Kathak. He is known for his multidisciplinary collaborations with artists such as Anish Kapoor, Kylie Minogue, Nitin Sawhney, Anthony Gormley, Juliette Binoche and Sylvie Guillem.
He talked to IdeasMag about his inspirations – from Thriller and superhero films to art-house cinema – and explains why he gave up everything for dance.
