Student Ambassador Animation Event
Last week our first Student Ambassador – Melody Parker – paid us a visit. She rallied the Goldsmiths troops and brought them all down to IdeasTap HQ for an animation workshop and a slice of cake. Rebecca Brewis stuck her head round the round the door and asked what it means to be an IdeasTap Student Ambassador…
Probably all the best work is created by flicking through vintage fashion magazines over afternoon tea – as proved at the first event organised by our Student Ambassador, Melody Parker.
Last Thursday she and animator Giulia Messana-Loi held an animation class for fellow Goldsmiths students. They took over the Green Room here at IdeasTap HQ and created an impromptu production studio for the beautiful and bizarre.
Through some artful cutting, pasting and camera work, the retro magazines became moving images before our eyes.
Little 1950s black and white dogs serenaded glossy pin-ups on delicate cutouts of violins. By the end of the three-hour session, a whole love story had emerged from the collage and the students – mostly animation novices – were arranging to meet up again.
Giulia leads a lot of workshops and said that that this was “the most creative group I’ve been with.”
I asked playwright Sonal Summit why she had come along: “I’m writing a script right now, which will feature some animation.” For her it was a chance to meet other Goldsmiths students she would not normally come into contact with, with a view to collaborating in the future.
So what’s being an IdeasTap Student Ambassador all about? In Melody’s words, “My role is to organise two events per term. Hopefully over the course of this year I’ll be able to show other students what kinds of things are on the IdeasTap site. I think for anyone at university it’s a nice bridge to the outside world.
“Today there was a great mix of people from different courses at Goldsmiths who worked really well together and we all exchanged details at the end to stay in touch. We can't wait to see the result once Giulia finishes editing the video."
Neither can we. Keep an eye out for the video here on the site. And if you are interested in becoming an IdeasTap Student Ambassador yourself, get in touch with the team: marketing@ideastap.com.
