This week’s fresh selection of bits and bobs knocking around t’internet...

Nicki Minaj – the new Lisa “Left Eye”?

What’s happened? Has the world turned upside down? I’m finding out about MCs from an X FACTOR contestant?

I watched Cher Lloyd – the voodoo doll, Malvern-dwelling 17-year-old in the running to win this year’s show – chatting on This Morning about her favourite artist, US rapper Nicki Minaj. SHE IS AWESOME, and features on this year’s highly amusing NME Cool List (along with Cher, as it happens). Her new album, Pink Friday, is out next month.

Check her out on Kayne West’s free-to-download playlist – she owns the track Monster. I also like her guest spot on Ludacris’s My Chick Bad.

Magazine Library

Good old Tokyo. They do things to the max there, and Magazine Library is no exception. These guys are so in love with magazines that they hold nights packed to the rafters with ’em. Hanging from the ceiling, stacked on the stairs. Imagine the equivalent in east London; you’d be left with an empty room because everyone would nick them…

My Vintage Vogue

Sometimes I discover a website that re-affirms my passionate love for the internet. My Vintage Vogue is it – despite the stupid name (Huge Database of Rare Old Fashion Photographs would be much catchier). Its scope is unfathomable; the founder, mysteriously known just as Jessica, has been collecting old pictures since primary school – there are whole sections dedicated to 50s models Suzy Parker and Evelyn Tripp, for chrissake. Excellent for checking the accuracy of period costumes too.

Fun/art

Oh to be an artist, what fun! I went to the private view of Bad Things That Could Happen at Jaguar Shoes in east London last night. The short film from This Is It collective features massive props such as a mousetrap, a hammer, a nail and a wall. The props are used to illustrate everything that could go wrong, and accidents ensue. It was entertaining, hilarious and bloody good fun. I also like this project from Barcelona called I am Not an Artist. They’ve used a series of animated gifs to display work; take a look. And how funny is this video they did: Wooork the Musical (below)! It’s a bit rubbish, but that’s what makes it good…

Vladislav Erko’s Playing Cards

Vladislav Erko is an artist best known for his illustrations in nauseating novelist Paulo Coelho’s books. It turns out old Vlad is, in my opinion, much more interesting than his cod-philosophy colleague. What’s not to love about these beautiful playing cards he’s illustrated?
