Editor's Brief: Grow winners
This was the first round of our brand new Editor’s Brief and boy did it prove to be popular. We broke it down into three categories: audio and video, visual arts and photography, and text. Nine winners – here they are…
Text
1st Jennifer Bell
We loved Jennifer’s piece of flash fiction. Of the story, she explains, “This is a story about the development of a relationship between two siblings following the death of their mother.”
2nd Ben Norris
3rd Grant Kerr
Audio and video
1st Benjamin Fox
Benjamin’s gloriously unsettling short film won this category. He says, “As landscape segues from winter to spring, decay regenerates into growth, and a new cycle of life begins. And it is within the corporeal landscape of man were we find a similar process of renewal. Picture a man, a man damaged in some form or another, patiently waiting for nature to go about its business of repair. But what magic does the body weave to mend the broken? This short informative film goes under the skin to find some answers.”
2nd Owen Davey
3rd Lucy Fry
Image and photography
1st Megan Wellington
Megan’s beautiful photo of her grandma won this category. She explains, “It is a portrait of my Nanny, my primary care giver during my childhood. She is a member of Mensa, she grew up in India and taught me the two times table before I could count to 10 using the terraced houses of my town. She lives on a council estate, and is crippled by many ailments, although never says a word. She is the reason I became the person I am, she is the reason I continue to grow every single day.”
2nd James Beattie
3rd Helen Flanagan
