About me

I'M currently a Creative Digital Media Apprentice at the BBC here in the UK. I’ve been into filming since the age of 11. I saw it as a form of escapism somewhere my ideas and imagination could go wild. I was finally able to fully immerse my self into the world of media the day I finished secondary school. I received an opportunity to take part in a 5 week summer programme at Youth Culture television that involved all aspects of studio television production. By the end of the summer programme we had successfully produced four 15 minute magazine style shows for young people. This made me decides that the film industry is the perfect place to try and express my creative energy. The college I went to gave me and seven other talented filmmakers an opportunity to take part in a 3 week work experience in Germany Berlin. We created a short documentary on the history of graffiti in Berlin and the Berlin wall, this experience then gave me talents that allowed me to direct a BBC outreach documentary. ‘Is the BBC for me?’ were we asked the question if the BBC workforce truely reflected the population of Britain and will they be more excepting if a young working class person wanted to join the BBC team. This Documentary then went on to win the whole entire BBC outreach programme, which then resulted in me being given a two week work placement at the BBC’s flagship magazine programme the One show. I gained valuable experience on how a television programme is brought to millions of people’s screens everyday. Being able to work hands on in the media industry is an extreme and exciting experience

  • Thanks a lot, Moses, and good to meet you on here. Gosh, advice....? Not sure if I'm equipped to offer any as I'm still amazed that I got it, but I'll try! My main advice, I guess, is don't try to second guess what you think they want to hear - only you know how vital your project is, and your own commitment and belief in that is what will make it, and you, stand out. Be realistic of where you are in your trajectory and don't try to take on subject matter or techniques that are too much of a stretch at this time, but do take risks. Really consider where you want to be with your work in a year's time, or five years time, or ten years time, and make sure that your project marks a profound step towards that, not just a one-off opportunity for funding. Most of all, be brave. I found it quite difficult to write my proposal, because I really had to question who I was, where I was in my trajectory as an artist, and where I needed to be. It can make you feel a bit vulnerable, but the outcome is a stronger sense of yourself, which is useful whether you win the award or not. On a more practical note, get your submission in before the deadline, don't leave it to the last minute! Get someone (or a few people) to read over it before you submit it. Really pay attention to the 100word summary and see if what you've written excites other people, because, at the start of the process, that's the most important part of your application. And make sure your portfolio is relevant to the project you're proposing. Finally, do it! There's a tendency to psych oneself out of applying (especially to such a huge award) but don't. You'll get a lot from the process of applying, and, if you're passionate about what you do, chances are you might get shortlisted! And if you don't, you'll still have learnt masses about yourself as an artist!

Wishing you the very best of luck with it, and let me know if I can help in any other way!
