Scratched DVD

This piece was featured in the 2013 Lightworks Festival held in Grimsby, Town Hall Square, Abbey Walk Gallery and Gate Gallery, 15th March. As the title suggests it's a brief audio documentation of a DVD attempting and failing to read a scratched DVD

24 Hours

24 Hours features a portable cassette player suspended from the gallery ceiling with an unspooled audio cassette connected to exactly 24 hours of music (414720cm of magnetic tape) on the gallery floor. Installed inside the player is a contact microphone amplifying sound generated from the motors continuously playing the unspooled audio cassette. One flaw with audio cassettes was the magnetic tape could be prone to unspooling from its plastic casing and 24 Hours takes this fault to absurd levels. The pile of magnetic tape can be interpreted as symbolising a familiar unit of time and the decline of audio cassettes since the introduction of CDs, MP3s and downloads.

About me

I'm a multimedia artist currently based in Norwich, Norfolk working primarily in the disciplines of sound, performance and conceptual art.

I graduated from the Norwich School of Art and Design (now Norwich University of the Arts) in 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art New Media.

I’ve performed and exhibited at venues and events that include the Norwich Art Centre, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts (Norwich), Firstsite (Colchester), Rathmines Library (Dublin), Stew Gallery (Norwich), FIRSTS 09: Linbury Studio Theatre (London), SPILL Festival National Platform of Performance (London) and Louise T Blouin Institute (London).

My main areas of interest include hardware hacking, circuit bending and creatively misusing as well as exploring the limitations of obsolete technology such as the compact audio cassette. Works very often explore themes of endurance, repetition, and the passing of time.

Since 2008 I’ve been an active member of other/other/other an artist collective based in Norwich, Norfolk. Early in 2012 with fine artist Elizabeth Scrase we established the sonic and drawing art collaborative project Ridge & Scrase.
