  • Why I understand the Scottish people but disagree with Salmond

    18/09/14 at 10:14

When I was up in Edinburgh in the summer, this guy at the coffee shop told us that even Alex Salmond's team are saying "oh dear god, what have we started."

This was no ordinary getaway. I had characters without homes, streets with no names, bars without atmosphere. I had to search for authenticity, otherwise I’d remain feeling a fraud.
  • Alain, Why Have You Forsaken Me!

It’s been 21 days since I embarked on a five-week getaway plan to indulge myself and finish writing my novel. The days are hotter than expected and my brain melts in the midday heat. Each day at two, the cool refuge of the library kicks me out with the loud echoes of Sugar Man by Rodriguez telling the punters: 'go home to rest'. My mind, still racing with the plot, rushes back to the apartment block. Three doors up, construction work, though it feels more like an exhibition stand to look down my top and up my skirt.
  • True Success

Anyone who has studied drama or acted has, at least once in their life, fantasised about making it to the red carpet. Rubbing shoulders with the likes of Ryan Gosling, calculating how to ensnare him with your seductive ways to leave Eva and have your babies. Donning a long backless dress at the swanky awards after-parties, wondering which star to turn lesbian for: Scarlett Johansson’s lips or Keira Knightley’s eyes.
  • Win £1,000 cash and work experience at the Guardian

    08/01/13 at 12:58

If you are like me and woke up on the first of January 2012 knowing that this is the year you will turn the magic three-zero, then looked around to find you are still in a second-hand bed, still renting overpriced and poorly insulated accommodation and as a result have a strained relationship with your boyfriend as the limited resources to your disposal mean it is just as reckless to conceive a baby now as it was at sixteen, you may understand why I am part of the Intergenerational Foundation.
