About me

I have published short stories in many UK magazines and anthologies, including 'Reshape Whilst Damp' (Serpent’s Tail, 2000), 'Valentine’s Day: Stories of Revenge' (Duckworth, 2000), two volumes of the British Council anthology New Writing, 'NW13' (Picador, 2005) and 'NW14' (Granta, 2006), and 'Waving at the Gardener' (Bloomsbury, 2009).

I am a reader for the Literary Consultancy and have taught for Birkbeck College, the Open University and the Arvon Foundation and, currently, on the BA in Creative Writing at London’s South Bank University.

Awards for short fiction include the 2009 Asham Award (finalist) and the 2006 Chapter One International Short Story Prize (winner).

I started London Writing Workshops in 2008 in order to create a positive, inspiring space for writers at all levels of development. I have worked with small groups of novelists, some of whom have gone on to be published by small or mainstream presses. I have also offered many people a starting point for long-held writing ambitions. Contributors and guest speakers at various workshops include the poet and novelist Bernardine Evaristo, the publisher Francesca Main (now at Picador) and the writer and comedian Alexei Sayle.
