About me

My name is Konstantina Skalionta and I am a London-based choreographer, contemporary dancer and dance teacher. Upon graduating from Central School of Ballet, I continued my studies in contemporary dance at the London Contemporary Dance School. As a postgraduate student there I performed repertoire by Richard Alston, Merce Cunningham, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Sasha Roubicek and I undertook courses in 'Videodance', 'Choreography' and 'Improvisation into Performance'

Since my graduation in 2012, I have been involved in projects by choreographers such as Paolo Mangiola, Jemma Bicknell, Elise Nuding, Joseph Lee, Rosie Whitney-Fish, Rania Leontiou, Henrietta Hale and Lydia Fraser-Ward.

As choreographer, I perceive the performance space as a white canvas and the art of choreography as a unique tool, my paintbrush with which I can ‘paint’ upon the canvas, transform it and enliven it.
Although I draw themes from personal experiences or real events and my reactions towards them, as a human being woven in a community, I consciously create my work in an attempt to explore human politics, social relationships and mental conditions. I am attracted to philosophical matters, to concepts such as phenomenology, emotion, cognition and the unconscious mind.

My performances often narrate personal stories, they allow the viewer to enter my own personal experiences. I often feel as if I am standing emotionally naked in front of the audience. I reveal myself through the divine movement of dancing that cannot be separated by the dancer like other forms of art …

I prefer projecting ‘people’ on stage rather than skilled dancers, as I aspire to make the audience immerse into the movement and make connections drawn from their own conscious and subconscious depths.. I am interested in creating experiences for both the audience and the performers which will involve, engage and intrigue them..
Being a great admirer of the visual arts, I seek collaborations with different artists in order to make work that is a further dialogue between art and dance.

So far, my work has been presented in platforms such as Resolution! 2014 (The Place), Women of Mass Destruction 2 (RichMix), SDC Scratch Night Event (Glive Theatre), Design for Dance 2010& 2011 (Cochrane Theatre) and festivals such as the Surrey Dance Festival 2014 and City of London 2011.

Together with Lucia Schweigert, I co-produced the first 'Kaleidoscopic Arts Platform' on the 13th of November, at 47/49 Tanner Street in London Bridge. Our aim is to establish Kaleidoscopic Arts Platform as a quarterly platform which provides emerging artists with the opportunity to present their work and be involved in a post performance Q&A session with the audience.
