Two Days, One Night (2014) Directors: Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne Starring: Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione My first impressions early in this film were that like Rust and Bone, the last French-Belgian film I watched, there seemed an almost laid-back, meandering sense to the story. The characters move quietly through sun-drenched Belgian landscapes, a weird calmness blankets every action. I found myself thinking, “Not much happens in this film, does it?” Then it hit me: I’ve been brainwashed. In a time of monolithic Marvel blockbusters with fast-paced dialogue and bloated emotion I had clumsily neglected the urgent subject matter at...
A 300 word film review on the Dardenne Brothers' film 'Two Days, One Night'

I found myself thinking, “Not much happens in this film, does it?” Then it hit me: I’ve been brainwashed. In a time of monolithic Marvel blockbusters with fast-paced dialogue and bloated emotion I had clumsily neglected the urgent subject matter at the heart of this beautiful film. The Dardenne Brothers have certainly been making a mark on international cinema with The Kid With A Bike and L’Enfant as well as co-producing Rust and Bone . These films tackle intense human relations in working class society. The aim to show the ordinary person’s struggles in recession-riddled Europe is strong in this film too. Marion Cotillard, an Oscar-winner for La Vie En Rose who dabbled in stardom with Inception here plays Sandra; a young mother battling severe depression, visiting all her factory co-workers over the weekend to convince them to vote to keep...

Film Review: 'Two Days, One Night'
This is a blog post I wrote for the primarily music-based blog Anywhere in Albion. the article can be found at http://anywhereinalbion.com/film/ My Favourite Film Characters A favourite film character doesn’t necessarily have to be one notable of awards – although a couple of mine are - and they don’t necessarily have to have been a major role. For me, a favourite film character is one that you find yourself instantly intrigued by, whether because you identify with them or because by some random cosmic force you find yourself pulled to them, like some giant cinematic magnet is drawing...

For me, a favourite film character is one that you find yourself instantly intrigued by, whether because you identify with them or because by some random cosmic force you find yourself pulled to them, like some giant cinematic magnet is drawing you to the screen. That for me is the magic of film - really any kind of artistic work - when you are unconditionally drawn to an aspect of it. The beauty of film is that you can watch your favourite character as many times as your heart desires. So here goes: Paul Bettany - Geoffrey Chaucer in A Knight ‘s Tale ‘and anyone else out there NOT sitting on a cushion!’ So unashamedly theatrical, so well delivered and so hilarious. I have watched A Knight’s Tale an embarassing number of times. I woke up on New Year’s Day a...

About me

Why hello :)

My name's Kirsty Asher, I'm currently studying Drama at the University of Bristol. I'm interested in acting, but more precisely I'm keen on creating and performing theatre work in an ensemble, devising and building a performance together. Companies like Kneehigh Theatre and a six week experience with the National Youth Theatre's Epic Stages course have helped me realise this.

At University I've been involved in extracts of Phillip Ridley's plays Shivered as Lyn for Bristol Dramsoc's annual TRASh showcase and Ghost From a Perfect Place as Rio for Studiospace Bristol's DAT. I've also been greatly involved in costume design for productions of the Glass Menagerie (Tennessee Williams), Arcadia (Tom Stoppard) and the musical Parade (Jason Robert Brown, Alfred Uhry). Experience in verse and Early Modern text include performances in extracts from The Witch of Edmonton as Anne Ratcliffe (Rowley, Dekker and Ford), Women Beware Women as Mother (Thomas Middleton) and A Midsummer Night's Dream as Puck. My housemates and I have teamed together to set up a production company, Great George Productions, of which I am currently Director of Film and we have recently received a grant to begin work on a short film/music video to accompany a comic poem.

University has helped me realise that whereas previous to it I was convinced I wanted to work in the film industry, I now realise I much prefer working in and making theatre, but I love writing about film. I've had a wonderful time exploring further the world of film with units on Contemporary Hollywood, Film Criticism and Hollywood Cinema History.

As well as time with the National Youth Theatre I have taken classes in Meisner and Strasberg technique, have taken speech surgeries with the fantastic Monobox over at the Old Vic and this summer took part in a three week Shakespeare and Contemporary theatre summer school with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

I suppose at the heart of everything I'd love to be involved in theatre in its once and future state: to tell old stories. Folk tales. I'm currently mulling over the idea of a travelling micro theatre company that uses modernised Commedia dell'Arte tales in its performances - dream big!
