About me

James Morgan is a freelance choreographer, performer and writer from Bridlington, East Yorkshire. From a practice rooted in contemporary dance, he works in the spaces between dance, experimental theatre, and live art. He believes in challenging the dance world’s present values and preoccupations with uncompromising ideals, critical thought, and playful satire. He is interested in the antagonism between high art and entertainment, and desires work which is both culturally provocative and accessible. His practice is highly collaborative, often working with designer Charley Fone, and performers, Esther Siddiquie and Tim Clark.

James graduated from London Contemporary Dance School and was recently selected as one of six participants on ‘Exit Visa 2014’, The Place's professional development programme for emerging choreographers. Based in London, he has performed in both devised and improvised work, and has worked with choreographers such as The Mostly Everything People, Lola Maury, Igor and Moreno and Theo Clinkard. His own works have been performed in venues such as The Robin Howard Dance Theatre and Sadler's Wells Lilian Baylis in London, as well as Seven Arts in Leeds.

He was the editor of and writer for 'Garble', the independent student magazine of LCDS, as well as a critic for 'Resolution! Review 2013' at The Place. In 2013 he was a key figure in organising the first conference at LCDS for the students of the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama, on the topic of artistic collaboration. This included a keynote discussion with Simon Ellis, Peter Farley, Lyn Gardner, Emma Gladstone, Wendy Houstoun, and Theron Schmidt.
