Recently, through the wonder of social media I came across a fascinating online petition called ‘Let Toys Be Toys’, which asks toy retailers and manufacturers to stop categorising toys by gender. This kind of gender based segregation of play things is something I disagree with, and I will tell you why: According to a recent Huffington Post article, the gendering of toys is worse now than it was in the 1970’s (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/07/let-toys-be-toys_n_3402972.html). Sadly, this doesn’t surprise me. If you look at the gender roles that these toys promote (girls should have babies and spend time in the kitchen and clean things, boys should have cars and spend time at the work bench and build things), they are forty years out of date. I think that teaching children that these behaviours are appropriate to their gender is enormously damaging and limiting. Also, this kind of gendering teaches children that males and females are different (potentially even opposite) and that it is the WORST POSSIBLE THING for a girl to be like a boy or a boy to be like a girl.
