3D Storytelling Conference and the future

13/03/12 at 23:07

Looking forward to next week's 3D Storytelling Conference curated by Ravensbourne and Skillset...

Now whilst I am not sold on the typical/consumer incarnations of this technology I think the capacity for narrative development and immersive-expressive performances/experiences using 3D technology during film production is immense.

Perhaps with a mastery over the technology filmmakers will be able to transcend the limiting effects the technology can have over character, story and the emotive experience of the audience.

It cannot be treated in its own right like the advent of picture or sound as it is an extension of the former but nonetheless immersion is something audiences have always sought and this approach to visual data is by its very definition one that raises questions of dimensionality or depth in the filmic experience.

Perhaps at its zenith the concept of interactivity, normally a term reserved for installation art and now social media, will be considered an integral part of moviegoers' experiences.

Even if only conceptually, this raises questions about the future of moviegoers interactions with media and how this will affect varying storytelling processes.

Is 21st century humanity content just to observe/spectate or is it becoming more and more paramount to feel a part of the illusion? Methinks neither and both.
