AlOgando's Blog

Hello IdeasTap!! Go on and read me, you know you want to...

06/09/13 at 12:56

If you are reading this now no doubt you were swayed into it by my persuasive title! As creatives are the most curious of types I'm hoping at least a few people will be reading along with you now.

With my first blog I just wanted to talk abit about being a young person just starting to dip their toes into the vast ocean that is the working world of the arts. As this is something everyone can relate to no matter where you are in your career.

Like most I like to think of myself as a Director, Writer and Actress. (In that order) and again for us starting out in the working world of the theatre, it can seem like a big bad world full of rejection and criticism from the outset but I am hoping that in between the sharks in the ocean there's a nice pearl of wisdom that can be used to help us young folk climb the ladder to success! But where the hell is it...

Here I suppose I'm looking for reassurance!

The advice I am always given is to make contacts and network. But for us starting out this can be a daunting notion and an even more daunting experience. What I want to know is what to expect from networking? If you are a professional and someone asks you for guidance and a helping hand in the industry how far are you willing to go to help someone kick start their career?

I know personally I'm hoping and praying that through my networking one day I will find a mentor who sees potential in me and wants to help hone and nurture my young ability into a professional and successful skillset worthy of an audience and at least a pay check! But I know that's probably too much to expect. The big break we all dream about at night whilst fighting off creative block! So how exactly do you go about networking and getting that all important foot in the door?!

Maybe someone else can tell me, is there networking etiquette?

And do you have any sterling advice for someone just starting what I'm imagining to be a long and complex journey?!

If so I'd love to know!

Tata for now! xx
