'Nomadic Drawings'

About me

Ahmed Magare is a fine artist, poet and spoken word artist, currently studying Fine Art BA (Hons) at Birmingham City University.

Ahmed Magare mainly specialises in (Unsi) Incense and Henna drawing, he draws on Fabriano paper, canvas and fabrics (traditional Somali fabrics)
He tends to draw from memory (focusing on past events), which become childlike and playful drawings; these then form into written material for his poetic and performance work.

Magare’s fabric drawings are celebrative sculptures of past memories. His interests lie in the poetic sequence, not remembering his words but rather reading out passages to remember lost thoughts.

He is inspired by Yinka Shonibare’s statement of being a cosmopolitan citizen, 'Nomadic Drawings' create a spectrum of storytelling experience and a time travelling medium that leads to the traditional lifestyle of Somali people.

Magare questions 'nomadism' (and what it is to be a modern-day-nomad) and explores identity through the idea of borrowing cultures, by using traditional scented pigments as communication tools to connect with his life and others.
