?? A recent article in the Paris Review got me thinking. What does my bookshelf say about me? A close friend of mine recently relayed a hilarious account of what can only be described as an alluring book. Preposterous as it may sound, the book – The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño — seemed to attract a great deal of attention, be it passing remarks from strangers, glances from passers-by, and even a long conversation about the aforementioned cult classic with an unrelenting stranger. The first incident, she recalls, occurred on the train. A stranger, noticing the book she was carrying asserted “that’s a really good book. I read it last summer”. Cue: awkward moment. What to say? Carry on the conversation and become best friends with the alternative extrovert? It would be rude to dismiss the remark, of course, so clearly what was required was a short remark about the book in question, its author, or other books by the same author. The conversation went as follows: ”I replied “Oh yeah, I read his other one….”, his response “enjoy it”. End of conversation”. This was not the last of the chance encounters with strangers.
