An audition

09/02/13 at 20:08

Day 1: Applied for a role of my ideal casting. I got offered an audition within the hour and decided to go for it great guns and work my butt off. Located script in library next town over.

Day 2: Got up, drove over and checked out play. Took it home, read it, did accent research, reminded my stuff of relevant historical detail from my degree, actioned and annotated my script. Learnt as much as I could.

Day 3: Got up warmed up, worked out which item in my wardrobe was most subtly like my medieval character. Arrived at audition 30 minutes early. Walked the streets of Wapping in character. Did the audition.

Left the audition not really knowing how I had done – which is how I prefer it. Some healthy professionalism on the side of the auditioner. There’s nothing like being made to feel like you’ve got the role to learn that the next person through the door was better and pipped you to it. Such a long way to fall.

In this instance I didn’t get the role, but I had the loveliest rejection letter I’ve had thus far in the profession, detailing that my performance and skill was great but it went to someone who just looked more boyish (as was the part). Nothing you can do about the way you look, and it is so often the case. I’m proud of the work I put in in the time, and it’s the work I should, and will aim, to put in every time. It felt good to work so hard for a role. I did my best. I did well. I didn’t get it. It would be nice to have something additional on the CV to actually show for it. Maybe next time I will. Geez, it’s hard. Just gotta keep going. Next audition on Saturday.
