I have been running a series of events called OCCASION mainly at the Star and Shadow Cinema in Newcastle roughly once a month this year. I have run four successful events (3rd October and 20th November, 11th January, 14th February) so far, bringing around four hundred and twenty visitors, involving eleven artists, thirteen musicians, three independent retailers and two dancers from all over the country.

The purpose of these exhibitions is to make art more accessible to the general public, and bring a greater diversity of people to an art show. Another factor for me is to give young artists the opportunity to exhibit in publicized events, as it can often be a struggle to get onto a platform. I am also keen to use the events to promote the venues I exhibit in, as they are often independent, volunteer lead spaces that have huge amounts to offer. However the integral function of the OCCASION is to produce astounding shows that that are both fully enjoyable and inspiring.

To diversify the traditional exhibition precedent I have included a mix of DJing, VJing projections, contemporary live music and dance and stalls selling independent clothing and jewellery brands. This has been a hugely effectual tool in increasing the number of attendees as well as forming well rounded and fully interesting shows.
