‘Cultivation is for Gardeners’ A blog on arts funding by Paul Roseby

07/07/11 at 12:26 — edited 07/07/11 at 12:27

I'm sorry to see the departure of Nicholas Kent from the Tricycle Theatre. Nick has made some inspiring contributions to the world of political theatre and there aren't many people in the industry who have not seen and enjoyed a Nicholas Kent special at his theatre over the years.

There has never been an easy time to fundraise and clearly his departure signifies the struggle many are feeling. I do believe however that the culture of giving can change to reflect the wider interests of a venues’ local and potentially most loyal audience.

I welcome any government initiative that offers match funding for philanthropic donors, which means the culture of asking now has to change too. We in turn have to roll our sleeves up and ask for money directly and not wrap the ask up in cotton wool 'development' terminology with some vague hope that one day he/she may just write a cheque.

Cultivation is for gardeners.

Theatre makers are exciting and let's not falter at the challenge to prove it and pay for it.

Paul Roseby, Artistic Director - National Youth Theatre of Great Britain
