Square Eyes Club: Killer Nun

25/05/11 at 01:48 — edited 31/05/11 at 12:01

We've never written a film review before so today is the day! And we are taking a favourite we've recently found: Killer Nun, to start with.

Shameless Distributions have done a terrific job of making you want to pick up their DVD. The bright yellow packaging is all I look for now in the Horror Section of HMV. That and Roger Corman movies.

Out of what I found in my hand the Killer Nun cover really spoke to me. An old woman in a pullover (seemingly not a Nun, disappointing but anyway) is gagged by a sticker reading "Father, I've been a murderous Whore". Well then, who can argue? I turned to the over side and Tits, Nuns and even some 70s bush. Well happy with my purchase before I knew it, I found myself sat down putting it in the DVD player with my flatmates.

It opens with a a trailer section. Usually I'd flick past but being that much of my time is spent surfing grindhouse trailers in google anyway we watched through them. The Black Cat, The New York Ripper, the most ridiculous being Venus in Furs but the haunting Baba Yaga is still something we laugh at now.

The soundtrack plays up on the start menu. It's unsurprisingly familiar Western twang can be found on Red Dead Revolver. In fact, this is the first evidence actually indicating to the quality and talent involved in this film. Alessandro Alessandroni, most famous for A Fistful of Dollars soundtrack, scores.

Giallo and spaghetti Westerns are noted for their absurd storylines made ever more crackpot by the belief behind the beautiful compostion and true skill of the filmmakers.

It opens with stunning choreography and visuals as the sisterhood appraoch their morning prayers. An evil sounding nun crowing to the padre in the confessional about her malignant feelings.

The film's sex certainly excites but would be nothing without the pure shock value which boil right down to its central ideas - the script is said to be based on a real drug addict who sought refuge in a nunnery and hospice and made drug money bumping off terminally ill patients and nicking their jewellery.

The film is sinister and believable. Erotic and vintage. The hospice patients provide a light characterisation such as the man who sleeps in a Jimmy-Savillesque tracksuit. The pure derangedness of the scene in which two, patients, an older gentleman in a wheelchair and a rather attractive young lunatic-lady are found fucking in the rain by a hedge maze!!! And are then suffocated by cotton wool. Well, it gave me belly laughs anyway. How could they think up this and shoot it so masterfully.

It's appropriate that sex symbol Anite Ekberg of Fellini's Dolce Vita stars in the central role but her scenes are stolen by the exceptional breasts of Paola Morra. Ekberg's interview: The Nun Speaks Out can be found in the features and beautifully fits the tacky and bizarre tone. Drunk she stutters in broken english out how appalling she found her overdubbing. Hilarious.

Now, most people are reluctant when they see the cover but with the resurgence of Grindhouse cinema initiated by the unsuccessful RR/QT effort and the more recent offerings of Hobo With A Shotgun and Machete these films are a "Must Watch" for exploitation lovers. Even Nike are finding their exploitation roots, nope not in South East Asian sweatshops but with the new Black Mamba promo with NBA star Kobe Bryant. So don't turn your nose up, it's a cinematic renaissance.
