Hallo! My name is James McDermott and I’m a Norfolk based playwright, actor, magician and director. I’m obsessed with Morrissey, Rufus Wainwright, Steve Coogan, Tom Wells, Mark Ravenhill, Alan Bennett, Ali Smith... their work sets my heart and my imagination on fire.

Currently in my final year of a BA in Scriptwriting and Performance at the University of East Anglia, I’ve had three plays staged by UEA’s Minotaur Theatre Company and I’ve also performed in several of their productions including The Accrington Pals, Mike Bartlett’s 13 and Bill Gallagher’s Darkle, which won the Norfolk Arts Award 2014 for Best Play. I co-directed a professional revival of Darkle starring renowned actor David Hayman at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

I'm currently taking part in a young writer's development program with the Menagerie Theatre Company in Cambridge. There, I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some renowned theatre makers including Caroline Horton, Claire McDonald and Thomas Eccleshare. I’m currently under commission to write a play for Menagerie’s New Writing Festival and I’m soon to start teaching a playwriting course at The Sheringham Little Theatre; my new one-man show Beached will premiere there later this year.

I am also an accomplished magician & mentalist and I've been performing close up magic in pubs and clubs for the past five years. My new one man comedy magic show 'Disappeared With A Poof' is in development.
