I have a problem!

29/07/10 at 21:52

I have a problem. When I take on a job, I become so wrapped up in doing the job well that I morph into a stereotype and an over the top characterisation of myself. It’s weird I know! For example, I was a receptionist for two years and that’s when I first noticed my little problem. Maybe it was the phone ringing every thirty seconds that pushed me over the edge. Perhaps it was every single person that walked through the door asking where they should sign their name (whilst pointing to the sign in book) and what the date is (even when I had filled in the date for them!). But suddenly I say a chance in myself. My fashion sense had changed: I became addicted to stalking eBay for unwanted Lipsy dresses. I even made up that one of the PA’s was my arch enemy and would stop my work and give her evils every time that she walked past (she did it to me too). I even found myself putting on this imaginary mask of a bitchy spoilt brat, American teenager that belonged strutting around a mall in on the set of Clueless. Then it struck me. I was Amanda from Ugly Betty and kind of proud of it. So, I left that job! I decided to take the plunge and become an actor!

So that was four months ago. Now I am a sit at home jobless ‘actor’ and sit on my arse all day email harassing directors, casting directors and producers. I my head, these are the only people that I need to impress to get a job. On the side I ring up promotion agencies and beg them to give me a job (I have endless promotion agency rants). I thought when I left my reception job I would lose some weight as I wouldn’t be spending all of my time sitting in front of a computer screen in an office. It turns out I’ve actually have put on weight as now I still sit in front of a computer all day, just at home. The difference is now I don’t have to walk to the train station to be a lazy inactive bum.

I like a bit of fingers up to the industry and watch me do it my own way. So in revolt and retaliation to years of rejection, I decided to set up my own film production company with some help from my friends. In October we will be shooting our third film but first feature in Bulgaria. As Bulgaria is a creepy place anyway we’ve decided to make a horror film and being the writer of the group it’s down to me to write the script. Here’s my where my little problem comes in. I am terrified! After reliving spooky moments and researching spirits and the un-dead I am now terrified of my own shadow. Its taking me years to man up and now I’m creeping round my flat like I’m in a fairground haunted house! I’m pretty sure everything in my script is gonna end up coming to life. So there you have it, my little problem. Like in my reception job where I turned into a bitch, I have now become a writer and become absolutely raving nutter!
