During my third year of university I volunteered as a Drama tutor at a local school in Bethnal Green. My duties involved helping to run lessons and guide students through their courses, providing support and guidance where required. I helped to run Applied Theatre Workshops at a local college in Cardiff for teenagers, who were part of the NEET scheme (Not in Education, Employment or Training). Having left school at 16, these students had little or no experience in Drama or Theatre Studies, and the majority of them came from challenging backgrounds. Our workshops were designed to encourage the students to gain confidence and find enjoyment in drama. I had to be receptive to their issues and concerns and had to demonstrate empathy and encouragement to gain the respect and confidence of the teenagers. Although challenging, the workshops were a success and I found the whole experience to be thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable. In the summer of 2012 I visited Perth in Western Australia where I carried out voluntary work assisting at holiday camps for children aged 4 – 12.
