7th BFI Future Film Festival

18/03/14 at 16:37

It was a pleasure to be at the BFI Future Film Festival again this year and to be around talented and like minded peers, it has really inspired me with ideas to move forward with, ones which I hope to actually execute this year.

Friday the start of the festival was exceptional in terms of the energy and speakers, I started my day off with Dick Fontaine whom I find to be really engaging and receptive in the questions the floor was throwing back at him.

I then attended the Grierson Panel which where people I was already familiar with through First Light but still found the interesting with the addition of Andy Glynn from Mosaic Films and Tom McDonald from BBC Documentaries, it was also very good to hear Adeyemi Michael this year student Grierson Award winner.

On Saturday I attended the Fiction Awards, it was really good to watch all the films that were nominated and see how the young people from both categories where pushing the boundaries available to them to tell great stories. One film chimed with me especially was 'Dream Sweeper' a film I heard since it was a rough idea, it was written and co-directed by a friend and fellow Second Light member Myriam Raja and Alexander McNeill. It was surreal watching it on the big screen knowing the full journey of the film.

The final day after what so far has been a  fantastic weekend. I had the pleasure on sitting in on this years Bafta nominated animator, who spoke and reassured us as young film makers trying to get into the industry to make work! Challenge ourselves, push boundaries with the with the limitations imposed upon us and enjoy the results.

I do not know what the future hold for my career but I know that in February 2015, I will be at the BFI Southbank for the Future Film Festival soaking up all the industry advice, meeting my peers on a similar journey as me and getting inspired!
