A concert of original songs inspired by the Pulitzer Prize award winning autobiography ‘Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir of a Childhood’ by the late Frank McCourt. The songs capture the experiences of young Frankie and his family as they try against all odds to escape the poverty endemic in the slums of 1930’s Limerick. With original music and lyrics by composer Adam Howell, ‘Songs from the Ashes’ showcases a score inspired by traditional Irish folk music, pub songs and a variety of theatrical styles.

About me


I am currently a joint Artistic Director of Uncontained Arts; a theatre company created in conjunction with the University of Derby, based at the Derby Theatre, which I established with other graduates of the Theatre Arts Course in 2009.

I have worked as composer/musical director on several productions but my passion is composing for musical theatre and I am currently developing a stage musical adaptation of the book ‘Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir of a Childhood’ by Frank McCourt, which will have its world premiere at the Derby Theatre in October 2012.

My theatre credits include: Penny Dreadful (Composer/Master of Ceremonies), Not So Grimm Fairy Tales (National Tour/Edinburgh Fringe 2011) (Composer/Various characters), Alice in Wonderland (International Tour/Edinburgh Fringe 2010) (Composer/Various characters), Much Ado About Nothing (Composer/Don John), The Little Mermaid (National Tour) (Composer/Various characters), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Director), Twelfth Night (Or What You Will) (Composer/Antonio) and Gas Station Angel (Composer/Griff).
