In September 2008, in a muddy campsite in Warwickshire, without knowing it, curious directive began their first process together. Since then, the young company has evolved into a multi-award winning devising theatre ensemble of 29 actors, directors, bio-medical scientists, choreographers, writers, producers, video artists, technicians, composers and designers.
The soul of curious directive’s work is defined by its devising process.
curious directive is an open-source ensemble sharing resource materials, techniques and routes into devising a theatre experience with anyone.
We are curious about everything.
We search for an alchemy which combines thinking scientifically and artistically in order to find responses rather than answers to our chosen curious questions.
More specifically, we spend our time interrogating the simple roles which science plays in everyday life, and then we find the right theatre directive, narrative and form to share this with you, our audience.
Scientists emerge out of their laboratories and into our rehearsal rooms to learn from our creativity. We venture into laboratories to observe, annotate and discuss the processes of being a scientist.
In the past two years we have transformed cupboards, corridors, theatres, assembly halls, pubs and science laboratories into pieces exploring cognitive neuroscience, light, architecture, genetics, motion and bio-politics. These transformations have been coined “creative landscapes.”
We aim to create accessible and innovative science/theatre experiences which encourage its audiences to be curious about the world, peering through the lens of science, and to keep interrogating beyond experiencing of one of our shows – see you there soon!
