The group was founded by three members of the Boris Ponizovski theatre "Yes - No" (Maksim Isaev, Pavel Semtchenko, Vadim Vasiliev) in 1989. Immediately they announced themselves as an independent theatre group (in term of styles and forms) and started working in the fields of performance, cinema and fine art. Since then the group has grown to seven members, but the permanent core remains - Maksim Isaev and Pavel Semtchenko.
From 1996 AKHE developed into a theatre collective and created the
performance "Catalogue of the Hero" for a more traditional theatre
environment. Since then the group has become a regular participant of
theatre festivals in Russia and abroad. The members of the group take
part in different theatre projects with other european groups and
theatres: Derevo (Rus- Germ), Lantaaren (Nederl.), Toihaus (Austr.),
Slava Polunin (Russ.), Linea de Sombra (Mexico), Kampnagel (Ger.), Théâtre de la Poudrière and Galpon (Swiss). They work as artists, stage designers and film directors but they also still use their artistic backgrounds, working as the painters and designers.
Because of their background in fine art, the group can be referenced
alongside Optical Theatre or Russian Engineering Theatre and they
focus on using "Space" as one of the main characters of any show,
alongside Light and Sound, considering themselves only 'Operators".
The space mastered by the Operators is valuable and sufficient in and
of itself. AKHE then works to create drama through developing images
and situations and creating psychological play by working with
physical laws.
