Love the work of promenade theatre kingpins Punchdrunk? Like to gain an insight into how they work – and get paid for it?
Punchdrunk Enrichment are offering five IdeasTap members the chance to work alongside key departments in their current production, The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable, which is based at Temple Studios, a disused Royal Mail sorting office in Paddington. Each of the five winners will also receive a £600 bursary. The placement will start on the 9th December for two weeks.
Each placement will be full-time for two weeks and will give you the chance to gain valuable experience in the following departments…
Design
An insight into, and some practical experience with, the following:
- designing a set that is more than 200,000 square feet
- documenting the space and creating inventories of the set and props
- buying props for the running of the show
- stock checks of show and set requirements
- assisting the design re-setters to dress and maintain the set (this may require some prop-making, detail dressing and making small fixings and on going maintenance to the set)
Technical (lighting and sound)
An insight into, and some practical experience with, the following:
- lighting design for a live performance
- sound design for a live performance
- co-ordinating and handling equipment
- running and crewing an ongoing production
- assembling/rigging lighting equipment
Production
An insight into, and some practical experience with, the following:
- working with the Production Manager to gain an insight into the management of a live theatrical performance and assisting with off-stage maintenance responsibilities
- assisting with ongoing production logistics
- assisting with maintaining production and staffing schedules
- assisting with the co-ordination of crew and maintenance teams across the site
- attending production and operational meetings
Costume
An insight into, and some practical experience with, the following:
- planning costume requirements for a large scale production
- sourcing costume materials
- managing maintenance of costumes and materials
Stage management
An insight into, and some practical experience with, the following:
- learning how the department sets up, checks and runs the show each night, and how this differs from a standard theatre show in terms of its control and running
- observing and assisting with stage management cues in the show, including escorting performers around the space and assisting with stewarding certain scenes
- observing and learning what goes into the setup of each show from the prop reset team, eg ensuring all hand props are in the correct place for the start of each show
- learning about company management structures and processes
- attending company management meetings
