  • Hello Harriet

Thank you for your response. As stated previously we certainly understand that there are artists / graduates who are 25 plus who are also looking for opportunities such has this one and we will certainly be developing briefs to cater for wider ages, so please keep your eyes on the partner page as we move forward. In particular we are really keen to develop opportunities for emerging dance practitioners and companies, so would really welcome your thoughts on what would be most useful at your current juncture.

This particular brief ties into our next generation program which is specifically designed for young people up to 24. So whilst it doesn't unfortunately cater for ages beyond this, It presents a wide range of young people with an amazing opportunity which I think doesn't come around that often, not just for graduates but for those perhaps have gone down other non-educative paths, and therefore with that in mind, I think it is anything but restrictive.

I agree with you that some people will graduate a little later, so this is perhaps something that we can look at, however there are also people who don't go to uni till they are 26+ and therefore might be 29+ when they graduate, so I think we do have to unfortunately draw the line somewhere as we could then be in danger of loosing our focus and Its important to always develop a brief or opportunity with a particular focus/ target/aim in mind as then you then have clearer indicators to measure the outcomes.

I am always interested in talking to young companies and emerging graduates so please feel free to contact me at mac daniel.whitehouse@macarts.co.uk and perhaps we could set up a meeting to talk through your ideas and work.

    Kind regards

    Dan

  • Dear Dan, In response to your comment about the age restrictions. I am a 25 year old 'recent graduate' and have been looking to engage with arts related opportunities in the west midlands and they are certainly few and far between! So for this project to be so restricted makes it even harder for recent graduates to immures themselves into the birmingham arts scene, even if they did study at a slightly older age. This is quite sad that this inclusive outlook is being portrayed by the mac, considering that the mac is such a vibrant and beautiful centre for the arts. Is there any chance that similar schemes would run with a wider scope for applicants?

    Many Thanks,

    Harriet

  • Hello Kayleigh

Thank you for your comment; we will certainly take this on board when we look at other opportunities that we develop in the very near future. There will defiantly be other briefs that will cater for a wider spread of ages, we are looking at some theatre related opportunities over the summer and certainly in Autumn.

Just so that you are clear, for this particular opportunity, we wanted to target those that were really fresh out of Uni or who perhaps had gone down other non education paths and who were right at the start of their artistic careers and in very early stages of development.

We do however recognise that there are companies and artist that face challenges even after they perhaps have been developing for 2-5 years (and beyond) down the line and we are always trying to find ways of supporting this and open to discussion about how we can make this work.

I would certainly be interested in talking to you about your company (unless its little earthquake as we are already talking of course) and what plans you have so please feel free to set up a meeting with me.

    Regards

    Dan

  • Gutted this opportunity is only open for 18-24 year olds. The London Creative Space brief says 18-30 year olds can apply, is there any reason why Birmingham's brief has been capped at 24? Would have jumped at the chance to apply had I have been 2 years younger, my theatre company and I are in desperate need of opportunities like this at this stage of our creative practice. Do you know if any similar opportunities may be available in the future for the oldies?
    Thanks
    Kayleigh
