Want to take your choreography career to the next level? Then this is the brief for you.
Award-winning choreographer Matthew Bourne and his company New Adventures are looking for the UK’s next big choreography talent. The prize? The opportunity to create a showcase of new work in 2014, and to be mentored by Bourne himself. Plus, his world-class team of judges will provide further mentoring, opportunities and support in the 12 months leading up to the showcase. It gets even better: approximately £40,000 will be available to fund the project.

Two distinguished new judges joining this year are: Emma Rice (Artistic Director, Kneehigh Theatre Company), Edward Watson (Principal Dancer, Royal Ballet). Returning judges are: Scott Ambler (Associate Artist, New Adventures), Lez Brotherston (Designer and Associate Artist, New Adventures), Nina Goldman (Principal Dancer, New Adventures), Christopher Hampson (Artistic Director, Scottish Ballet), Etta Murfitt (Associate Artist, New Adventures) and Sharon Watson (Artistic Director, Phoenix Dance Theatre).
Last year’s winner, James Cousins, is now an internationally regarded choreographer, and his showcase piece was performed at Sadler’s Wells.
Matthew Bourne says:
“I am delighted to be announcing the second New Adventures Choreographer Award. None of us at the company anticipated the huge appetite for an award of this kind the first time around. James Cousins has gone on to establish an enviable career as an international choreographer of contemporary dance and I am very much looking forward to finding our next winner.”
The award is run by Re:Bourne, the charitable arm of New Adventures. Founded in 2008, the charity delivers projects, training, courses and productions to find, develop and inspire the next-generation of dance-theatre professionals.
Terms and Conditions
- All applicants must be over 18 and be able to demonstrate they have an appropriate level of dance/choreographic training and/or experience.
- Applicants must be UK or EU citizens.
- Judges reserve the right to choose one winner, a winner and a runner-up or joint winners. Winners will be supported to develop work to present at a showcase.
- Due to the expected number of applicants, feedback can only be provided to those shortlisted applicants.
- Applicants must have an appropriate level of time to commit to the mentoring, the creation of work and the opportunities provided by judges.
- A willingness to travel around the UK is essential.
- Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend the Judges Retreat on Saturday 7 September 2013.
