Description

Our buddies at the Lowry are offering two emerging designers the opportunity to develop their CV by designing a commercial product range, in any medium, in response to the works of LS Lowry. Your product range will then be sold in the shop at the Lowry in Salford.

The product/products should be a visual response to one, or more, of the following key works by LS Lowry:

  • Coming from The Mill – open
  • Going to Work – open
  • Market Scene Northern Town – open
  • Yachts – open
  • Level Crossing – open
  • Group of People – open
  • A Landmark – open
  • Portrait of Ann – open

High-res images will be made available to the successful candidates by Ideas Tap (supplied by the Lowry). All of these works are currently on public display, either at The Lowry, or at Tate Britain.

This is a great opportunity for you to:

  • Develop your portfolio
  • Learn from experienced retail operations staff in an arts organisation
  • Gain more experience developing and understanding the commercial aspects of being a designer
  • To expand professional networks

The judges are looking for applicants with an interest, and some experience in, visual arts or product design. You should have some understanding of retail operations, or a desire to learn about this area, and an understanding of how artists can develop their work commercially, and apply this to an identified market. Finally, you should have the ability to think on your feet and possess a positive can-do attitude.

The two winners of this brief should give consideration to pricing of their product/s, including the unit price and retail price. You should also consider the viability of production as part of your online submission.

The winners design ideas will be market tested, and subject to an assessment of commercial viability before a decision is made to proceed to production.

Should the Lowry decide to produce your design, financial arrangements will be negotiated with you.

The two winners will receive a flat fee of £250 for winning, and then, if it is agreed that your designs will go into production, you can negotiate an ongoing financial agreement with the Lowry for distribution of your work.

You will also get the opportunity to work alongside and receive guidance from key staff at The Lowry.

Please note, it may be necessary to attend meetings at the Lowry.

This brief closes on Monday 2 December 2013 at 5pm and is open to IdeasTap members aged 18 to 30 on the closing date. We will not consider late applications under any circumstances, including technical difficulties, so allow yourself plenty time to get your application uploaded. If you have technical issues, please visit the Help Centre.
