Interested in arts journalism? Get hands-on experience and training in theatre and performance criticism from journalist and writer Maddy Costa – with the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT) 2014 international programme as your subject.
Twelve IdeasTap members will be selected to attend two special Spa workshops with Maddy on Wednesday 28 May and then Wednesday 11 June, 10am to 12 midday on both days.
After the first workshop, participants will receive a selection of free tickets for LIFT 2014 events taking place in the first week of the festival, and are expected to write a piece of work based on their LIFT experience.
In the second session they will be given feedback and mentoring by Maddy to refine their work.
There will also be an opportunity for the winners to have their writing profiled on the LIFT website. In addition, three articles will be selected to appear on IdeasMag.
This opportunity is specifically aimed at arts journalism students and young people hoping to break into the industry – it is not aimed at people already working in the industry.
Successful entrants will:
- be dedicated to forging a career in arts journalism
- have a distinctive voice
- have already started to create a body of journalistic work, whether in the form of a blog or published articles online or in print
- be able to submit an example of their writing which makes them an appropriate candidate for this brief – eg an arts-related review, interview or opinion piece
The judges are looking for keen writers with a passion for arts and culture and who are looking to develop an international perspective. Successful applicants will already be developing a body of work in arts journalism, but you don’t have to be dedicated to theatre – just be interested in writing about forms of performance and work that crosses the boundaries of art forms.
