Description

Actors! Listen up. Our comrades at HighTide have a paid opportunity for you…

HighTide are putting on a rehearsed reading of Dark Matter by Roger Mortimer-Smith in the evening of Wednesday 13 November in London. There will be rehearsals all day prior to the performance. You will be paid a flat fee of £50. The director is TBC. Casting will take place on Wednesday 6 November.

So, what’s Dark Matter about?

On the day a consumer electronics firm plans to launch a glossy new product, its PR department is thrown into turmoil by a newspaper article detailing the conditions in the Chinese factories where it's made. Meanwhile, in a physics laboratory deep underground in a disused mine, two scientists fulfill their obligation to make their work “relevant” to the local community. But how are they connected? And what do they have to do with the division into “eloi” and “morlocks” that HG Wells feared might be the ultimate fate of humanity?

Characters

Tasha: Early 20s, female, Chinese (Home counties accent)

Raj: Early 20s, male, British Indian (Home counties accent)

Jim: Early 50s, male, English (Yorkshire accent)

Annie: Early 50s, female, English (Yorkshire accent)

About the characters

Tasha and Raj are scientists working at the Morlock Particle Research Laboratory, located in a disused coal mine in Yorkshire (Morlock being the name of a fictional Yorkshire village).

Tasha is friendly and welcoming to the locals, Raj is contemptuous of them and would rather be anywhere else.

Jim was a miner who worked in that mine before it closed down, Annie is his wife.

Kieran is a local boy whose father once worked in the mine.
