Nicola on street style

By Nicola Robey 08/06/11

Pigeon toes, dead foxes and more fashion faux pas than you can shake a brick at. This week Nicola Robey is snapping to it over street style photography blogs...

Something is happening in our fair land. If you sport either a jaunty hat, cape or giant cross, happen to be under 60 and not an active member of the cloth, then at some point you’re likely to get approached by a blogger foaming at the mouth to get your photograph.

Street style photography has become a staple of the blog world following the success of sites like Hel-looks, Facehunter and The Sartorialist. These blogs combine impressive street photography with intriguing characters, outlandish fashions and an admirable dose of fashion commentary to go with it.

Yet following in their successful wake are an onslaught of imitating street-style blogs that have pillaged their way onto our screens like a hoard of malnourished, ankle sock-wearing Vikings. And quite frankly, they get to me.

Enter the prime offender; the rise of the pigeon toe. Why, oh why do blog posers insist on standing with their feet pointing inwards? Perhaps they’re channeling the ironic Lolita, the “I’m cute and innocent, but actually just an adult wearing the same garments I did when I was 10” look. Or could it be that these pigeon toed brethren suffer from an untimely bone ailment, such as rickets?

If by chance this stance makes clothes look better, then I shall attempt to cut Vitamin D out of my diet in its entirety.

Much as I would like, I simple don’t have the will or effort it takes to wake up in the morning and attach a dead fox head to my shoulder with safety pins or weave pom-poms into my hair. Especially since I’ve never actually owned a hairbrush and my routine has evolved just enough to remove the previous evening’s red wine crust from my mouth.

I did, however, once get stopped for a photograph whilst parading around Brighton. Before you judge me for revealing this, it was by two “fashion bloggers” who were, at most, 12 years old. I didn't know whether to be flattered or insulted, so I went with blushing, awkwardness and running away.

Katelovesme is a recent find that has got the fires of intrigue burning. Not only is this chap a guilty pigeon toer, he’s also taken the time out of his hectic social schedule to superimpose Lady Diana Spencer’s head onto catwalk models, finishing it with the tasteful caption, “If she was still alive, maybe Kate wouldn't have blinded me so much and this blog would be called Dianalovesme.” I wager it more likely to be Dianasgotarestrainingorder.com

What these blogs do show us is that anyone has the potential to become a citizen style critic. Since mobile phone camera technology means that we can all channel Cartier Bresson, a whole world of image grasping possibilities has opened up, wherever you are.

So, with this in mind I urge IdeasTappers everywhere to get out there and right these pigeon toed wrongs.
