Scott Bryan: My week as guest editor

By Scott Bryan 21/04/12

Our Guest Editor Scott Bryan reflects back on his week at IdeasMag. His theme was "Reasons to be Cheerful", and he found lots of them: creative workspaces, the joys of social media and the bright side of rejection...

Boy what a week this has been at IdeasMag!

Firstly in my opening post (along with introducing myself) I said that I am particularly bad at making spaghetti carbonara. Low and behold, what do I have in my inbox? Many recipes and tips from you guys of how to make it right! My particular favourite came form Huw Allen, a wannabe theatre producer, who reckoned that I needed to add a little oil to stop the butter from burning first and then add mushrooms to soak up the butter and add more flavour.

IT WORKED. I MADE SPAGHETTI CARBONARA THAT WAS ACTUALLY EDIBLE. THANK YOU.

Anyway, this week we tackled the big R-word: rejection. It is a topic that unites us all, regardless of whether we are wanting to be an actor, a writer, a journalist, a theatre producer or, heck, even just employed in this day and age.

I asked you guys for your coping strategies when times get tough and we got a wealth of replies, many of you suggesting that you need to just vent your frustration on side-projects. I also got wise words by email from one Paul James Oates who advised that, “If you are not cheerful to begin with, no one will want to work with you, be your friend or deal with you. It makes everything better. People have down days yes, but that’s not an excuse for dragging down others.” BOOM.

Also this week, Nell Frizzell wrote about actors who have later had success as writers, which shows that you can be successful in the creative arts world if your first strategy doesn’t go to plan. What was interesting was her point that if you are an actor, “you will already be creating characters, studying structure, unpacking narrative and imagining your way into alien situations.”

It really made me realise that there are always other options out there and the skills you’ve learned along the way haven’t been wasted. I also heartily recommend having a look at Intern X this week, who wrote about picking yourself up after a job rejection and considering your options.

On a different note, I decided to have a look at places where a freelancer or a creative person that can work that isn’t just a library, a cafe or in your front living room. What I didn’t realise is that there are some pretty cool, and pretty affordable, places out there. There’s also some directories that can help you find places if you’re not necessarily in the heart of London, Manchester or Leeds.

To finish off the week, I also started to have a look at all of the best ways that you can get exposure for your work online, so hopefully one day you wouldn't need to go to a recuiter or all important person, they come to you.

And the biggest things that I’ve learned this week? One. Everyone in IdeasTap is lovely and constantly makes each other tea. Two. That rejection happens to all of us, that you don’t get anywhere without it.

And three? That your life doesn’t seem so bad after watching this video.
