From top-secret theatre to scientific explorations of perception, IdeasTap is a riveting hive of activity. In fact, this month we’ve been so busy reading about all the ridiculously creative things that you lovely lot are up to, it’s a wonder that we’ve found the time to go out…
Elliot Brown
With a Twitter feed that reads like a guide to the London theatre scene, actor, producer and journalist Elliot Brown certainly knows a lot about the stage.
As Associate Director at The Barn Theatre in Hertfordshire, Elliot helped to launch fundraising event series, The Barn Theatre presents. Always enthusiastic to open up discussions about the stage, Elliot has recently taken on a role as a Taste Theatre Ambassador, where he will be blogging his views about theatres across London for the recommendations website.
But Elliot doesn’t keep his voice to online forums and will be performing in Richard Vincent’s In 20 Years Time, When He Sees This at the Greenwich Theatre’s The BIG Student Night tonight, 19 March. Turn your eyes to this thrillingly edgy trailer to find out more.
Tania Moore
At the end of February, the latest installation on the fourth plinth was unveiled. In Elmgreen and Dragset’s Powerless Structures, Fig 101, we see a small boy on a rocking horse, his carefree stance mocking the curious tradition where we scatter our cities with statutes depicting important-looking men on horseback.
In the wake of this launch, Tania Moore is currently preparing the Plinth by Plinth exhibition, where she will interrogate the importance we place on the plinth, what this form of presentation actually means to the public and why it has become “central to the artistic canon”.
Catch Tania at Fringe Arts Bath from Friday 25 May to Sunday 10 June.
Matthew de Kersaint Giraudeau
Around this time last year, we awarded Matthew £5,000 through our Ideas Fund Shorts brief so that his collective, The ARKA group, could develop a 30-minute piece. A year on, their film, The Ocelli, is now being exhibited at Space in Between in London.
We’re inspired by how Matthew takes a multi-disciplined approach; by bringing scientific thought into his art, he addresses how we come to perceive our surroundings from both a biological and creative angle. In 25 parts, The Ocelli breaks down the conventions of cinema, urging us to reconfigure how we approach the world.
When he’s not involved with ARKA, Matthew also airs his thoughts in his poetically titled blog and plays some tunes under the name Dogtanion.
The Ocelli is at Space in Between until Saturday 7 April.
Eva Sampson
We can’t tell you much about How it Ended Productions’ one-woman show, WATERPROOF, apart from that it’s on in Luton next week and will star IdeasTap member Eva Sampson (pictured). It’s not that we haven’t tried to find out more. Believe us, we really have. It’s just that the details of this production have been kept so watertight that even the venue remains undisclosed.
But we do know that the infectiously lively Eva is one to watch. Snappily describing herself in an interview last year as “Actor and Theatre maker. Big Hair. Big Grin. Has been craving a lie-in since early 2007”, Eva is energetically devoted to performance.
Eva will be performing in her “strictly secret world” from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 March. Book your tickets now.
Jack Whitewood
When you ask people what they do in their spare time, you hardly expect them to respond that they run their own fringe festival – but that’s exactly the answer you’ll get from Jack Whitewood.
When he’s not studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Jack is the Director of the Isle of Wright’s Ventnor Fringe, which he founded alongside an enthusiastic group of fellow teens back in 2010.
Not content with traditional venues, the team has invited performers into pop-up venues across Ventor and has even turned a Routemaster bus into a portable cinema, bringing new meaning to the term “moving picture”.
What we love most about Jack is his commitment to supporting and developing bold emerging artists. Want to get involved? Jack is currently seeking out creatives from all disciplines to perform at Ventnor Fringe this August.
