Fringe Alternatives
Find out where else you can go if you want to put a show on at a Fringe festival...
The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is almost over for another year, but there are plenty of other options if you missed out or are raring to stage your work elsewhere.
The London Fringe Festival is a new festival for 2010. It is held in August, operating out of two central venues – the Phoenix Arts Club off Charing Cross Road and the New Players Theatre near Trafalgar Square.
The Camden Fringe has been around since 2006. It is held in July and August in a variety of Camden venues, including the Lion & Unicorn Theatre, Upstairs at the Gatehouse and the New Diorama. Keep an eye on the website for details of the 2011 season.
The Brighton Fringe has been around since 2004. It’s an open-access arts festival; the next will be held between the 7th and 30th May 2011. Applications don’t open until November 2010 but you can sign up to the Fringe 2011 mailing list for up-to-date information about getting involved.
Buxton Festival Fringe has been running since 1980. It takes place in July and is open to entrants in all creative fields – whether you’re a comedian, a dancer or a film-maker. Check out the website for entry information and to find out when applications for next year open.
The Pulse Fringe Festival has been going since 2000 and is based in Ipswich. Venues include pubs, hotels, studio theatres and town halls. Applications for the 2011 season open in September 2010, when more details will be available on the website at this time.
The National Student Drama Festival is for anyone 16+ who is or has been a student within the last year. It is open to theatrical productions taking place between 21st February 2010 and 4th March 2011. Entries are open for 2011 – just fill out an application form and email their administrator.
Launched in 2007, the Manchester International Festival is held biennially. The next festival will be held in late June and July 2011; more details will be available closer to the time on their website.
