There might not always be a gold trophy in it, but entering competitions can get your work seen by industry experts – and maybe even win you some cash. So, whether you’re a graphic designer or a product designer, here are 21 of the best competitions currently open…

Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2014

Awards recognising excellent design achievements of professionals and up-and-coming talent, with 16 design categories and prizes including €10,000 as part of the Red Dot: Junior Prize for students and apprentices.

Deadline: 2 June 2014

Don’t Panic’s Weekly Artwork Feature

Get published and interviewed as part of an online feature of Don’t Panic’s favourite submissions, with an interview to showcase your work on their website to an international audience. Look out for regular Design The Poster competitions, too.

BAFTA Young Game Designers Competition

Two game design awards, one for game making and one for game concept, both open to people aged 11 to 16. Winners get their prototype made into a fully working game.

Deadline: 26 May 2014

IdeasTap Graduate Award – Design

Twelve design graduates will have the chance to benefit from a tiered programme of support designed to help them get their foot in the door. Prizes on offer include career coaching, funded exhibition space at Designersblock and up to £1,000 prize money.

Deadline: 31 July 2014

#NowFeeling

Design music inspired artwork for Spotify. A minimum of 20 finalists will have their work showcased and one winner will receive $2,500 and exposure across Spotify social channels.

Deadline: 16 May 2014

Taipei International Design Award

A local competition turned global for the first time this year. There are three categories: Industrial Design, Visual Design, and Public Spaces Design, with a top prize of NT $500,000 (£9,789) for each category.

Deadline: 31 July 2014 

Off the Map

GameCity hosts a competition involving a museum collection and gaming, in conjunction with the British Library and Crytek. Open to students. Finalists’ work is presented at GameCity 9 Festival. 

Deadline: 4 August 2014 

Andreu World International Design Contest

Furniture design competition. Design a seat or table that integrates the specifications outlined in the product briefing. First prize is €3,000 and second prize is €1,000.

Deadline: 1 December 2014 

World Standards Day 2014 poster competition 

Design a poster illustrating the 2014 World Standards Day theme: “Standards level the playing field”. First prize is 1,500 Swiss Francs and three runners-up receive 500 Swiss Francs each.

Deadline: 14 May 2014

Annual Specifier Awards: Naturally Creative Competition

For design innovation in packaging, publishing, office products, graphic arts and industrial applications. Any product produced during the previous calendar year is eligible for submission. Winners are featured in the award brochure and on the FiberMark website.

Deadline: 31 October 2014

Communication Arts Design Competition

Any design project printed, published or aired for the first time from May 2013 through May 2014 is eligible. Winning entries will be distributed worldwide in the Communication Arts Design Annual and on commarts.com.

Deadline: 16 May 2014 

Design a cover for the British Journal of Aesthetics

Annual competition, for students studying art and design, to design a cover for the journal, which is published by Oxford University Press. The winning design will be used on the cover of the October 2014 issue of the BJA and the winner will also choose £150-worth of books published by OUP. 

Deadline: 15 June 2014

The International Reggae Poster Contest (IRPC)

Create a poster about reggae music. The goal is to auction or sell the 100 best posters from the contest with a percentage of the funds going to the Alpha Boys’ School and the Help Jamaica Library initiative. Lots of Reggae-themed prizes, and an iPad for the winner. Opens 1 July 2014.

The International Visual Identity Awards

A winner and two runners-up are selected from 20 diverse categories, ranging from healthcare to fashion. Winners receive recognition: a press release will be circulated to all the major marketing and design media worldwide and they will appear on the IVIA website.

Deadline: 30 September 2014

Posters for tomorrow

This year’s theme is: “Work Right!” Poster for tomorrow is the main project of 4tomorrow, which aims to encourage people to make posters to stimulate debate on issues that affect us all. Winners have their work shown in an exhibition.

Deadline: 10 July 2014 

James Dyson Award

An international design award open to current and recent design engineering students. The brief is to design something that solves a problem. Prizes: $45,000, $7,500 and $3,500. 

Deadline: 7 August 2014

CG Student Awards

Awards for students studying for careers in Next-Gen Games and VFX/Animation industries. To enter, upload your demo reel, shot breakdown and your best artwork. There are $230,000 in prizes on offer and 15 studio internships for winners.

Deadline: 15 May 2014

2014 Adobe Design Achievement Awards Prizes

Celebrates student achievement reflecting the convergence of technology and the creative arts. Various prizes including up to $5,000 cash, mentoring and Adobe software. 

Deadline: 20 June 2014

Young Illustrators Award 2014 

Looks for creativity and innovation in personal contemporary illustration and graphic. The categories are: illustration (including pattern design), animation and book illustration/book art. Three winners receive 6000 euros and the possibility to take part in a scholarship-programme in Berlin.

Deadline: 1 June 2014 

Spark Design Awards

International competition with eight design categories, including one for students. The prize is industry exposure and new business opportunities. 

Deadline: 15 September 2014

David Salisbury
”Future of the Conservatory” Design Competition

Open to designs and architecture students. Design an innovative, interesting and inspiring conservatory for the opportunity to win £1,000, an iPad and an interview.

Deadline: 31 May 2014
