Pick 'n' Mix: techno

By hattie- IdeasTap 03/12/10

This week I’ve gone techno – we’re talking Tron, spies and yellow boys...

ZineSwap

I’m pretty excited about Zine Swap’s second birthday party tonight. It’s at Concrete Hermit off Carnaby Street and there’ll be spiced cider and cake! You can pick up a beautiful, one-off zine in celebration of their two-year anniversary with words from Alex Moshakis and design from Hugh Frost of the amazing Landfill Editions and ManyMono.

OSS 177: Cairo, Nest of Spies

This film, shown on BBC Four on 30 November, will fill the gaping hole left by Mad Men as Season 4 wrapped up. Set in the mid 50s in Cairo, Jean Dujardin plays the smoking hot Hubert Bonisseur de la Bath, alias OSS 117, who is brought in by France’s president to clear us the quagmire of deception. Watch on iPlayer.

Tron is back

Sci-fi geeks will be squirming with anticipation at the reinvention of Steven Lisberger’s ‘80s cult classic. You’d be hard pressed to find an artist/designer/fashion dude who hasn’t at some point referenced this movie, OK, so maybe I’m exaggerating – but Disney was so on the money with Tron. Director Joseph Kosinski has chosen the perfect moment to do this, using 3D Avatar technology (thanks James Cameron). There’s also a soundtrack from Daft Punk. But I am a little disheartened by the poster. Oh well, fingers crossed. It’s out 17 December.

Cine-City – Brighton Film Festival

Since 2003, the Duke of York’s  cinema in Brighton has had a partnership with Screen Archive South East and the University of Brighton to hold Cine-City, a film festival supporting the south east film industry. They’ll be hosting a number of free events – don’t miss Boy Who Turned Yellow on 4 December, a very funny 1972 film by Michael Powell.

Leonie Purchas

Photographer and filmmaker Leonie takes beautiful photos. I love In the Family, a selection of photographs taken while spending time with five different families, in France, Rome, Cuba, LA, London and Paris. Her short film, Last of the Conductors is pretty special too. Remember Routemaster buses? Leonie followed Brendon O’Hara during the final weeks of his 20-year career as a conductor. She also runs Still/Moving workshops; an artist-led, not-for-profit collective who’ve held talks with Martin Parr and JH Engstrom.
