Pick 'n' Mix: Streets

By hattie- IdeasTap 11/02/11

This week I’m coming at you straight from the streets, on the subject of street photography; to be precise...

Until recently, due to terrorism laws, snapping on the street was in jeopardy, but thanks to the European Court of Human Rights, who objected to the stringent laws, the pavement is ours once more…

Paved With Gold

I can’t quite express to you how much I love west Londoner Nina Manandhar’s work. She co-founded a self-published fanzine, Hardcore is More than Music, which is now “a Social Enterprise that creates jobs in media and creative industries for young people from black and ethnic minorities and working class backgrounds”.

Her photography is amazing, and really sums up what it’s like to be young and from London. Take a look at her film Paved With Gold (below) made in collaboration with Cieron Magat  filmed on London high streets. She also recently collaborated with online magazine Platform on a series of street style videos called I Saw You Standing, which are pretty good too.

London Street Photography

The Museum of London opens the London Street Photography exhibition on 17 February. The collection of photographs spans from 1860 to 2010 and includes work from John Thomson, Henry Grant and Roger Mayne.

Tommy Ton

As the beast that is London Fashion Week rolls back into town (18-23 Feb), there’s only one street style blogger I’ll be watching. And that’s Tommy Ton.

Ton runs blog Jak & Jil, shoots all over the world and also does a style blog for Style.com. His work brilliantly captures both the glamour and the humour of the world’s most ridiculous fashion folk.

Workshops

So you’d like to snap on the streets but think your skills need a brush-up? Why not try one of our recently launched photography courses, run by professionals at a cut-price.

Or you could go for one of Shoot Experience’s events – they do a workshop in Street Photography and Camera Handling.

London Street Photography Festival

From 7 to 17 July, London will be a hotbed of street photography. There will be special events at the National Portrait Gallery, the V&A and the British Library. There are also two awards that you can enter your work in, which are open now. First up, there’s the Student Award, with the winner receiving an Olympus Pen camera. The International Award winner gets £1,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to the awards ceremony in London. Submissions close on 31 March. Join their group on IdeasTap
