Old Vic New Voices community project Platform made me cry and I'm not a cry-baby...

On a pleasant Saturday afternoon I strolled down to Clapham Community Project to grab a look at rehearsals for Old Vic New Voices’ community production, Platform.

Staged at The Old Vic Tunnels, Platform stars over 100 volunteer Londoners. With choreography from Neil Bettles from renowned physical theatre company Frantic Assembly, (Beautiful Burnout anyone!?) it’s the story of citizens coming together in our favorite capital.

Without giving too much away, I can say I walked away from the run-through with an incredibly warm feeling about what it means to be a Londoner. And that’s an unusual feeling. Let’s face it, London can totally suck – missed buses, people who think personal hygiene is of no consequence, need I even mention the tube?

Just sitting in a hall, surrounded by every demographic imaginable, all giving up time to be part of something together was special. It’s going to be doubly exciting seeing this London story (no spoilers) played out at The Old Vic Tunnels, underneath Waterloo station.

It seems the good old general public agree as the show, which takes place from 7 to 14 November, is completely sold out. You’ve still got a good chance to see it for free if you turn up an hour early; evening performances start at 7.45.

Seriously, don’t miss it. It’s embarrassing, but I was crying a bit at the end and I’ve never cried at the theatre in my life.
