Members round-up: January

By hattie- IdeasTap 10/01/11

We’re long overdue a look at what you horrible lot have been up to. This month, I’ve decided to dedicate the member round-up to the visual arts, so get your eyeballs around these adorable portfolios…

Joseph Connor

Joseph Connor is a busy guy. He graduated from Central School of Speech and Drama in August and has been working as a director ever since. We particularly love his “making of” videos (note to all assistants on shoots – do “making of” videos).

Look at this one he does for Turkish Airlines – that’s the ACTUAL Man United team.

He also works with performance collective Parrot (in the) Tank, whose most recent production, Champagne Breakfast is about a disillusioned dartist (yup, I mean someone who plays darts).

Daisy King

At just 17, Daisy’s future looks bright. As a fan of hyper-realistic photography, I think her images are spectacular. How do you make dreary east London look like downtown LA? Get Daisy to shoot it.

Polly Glass

Polly is definitely one to watch. She recently quit her job as a jewellery designer to focus on her magazine, Wrap, a quarterly design publication featuring bespoke illustration that can also be used as posters and wrapping paper. Wrap is doing very well, with the first issue gracing the pages of the Guardian and Design Week. Keep your eyes peeled for the second issue, which promises more jaw-dropping design and entertaining editorial.

Gabriella Rizzello

Gabriella possesses the rare photographic talent of turning lead to gold. Take this shot of some ruddy old pipes – it’s beautiful.

Her pictures of the inside of a petroleum tank look like she’s shooting on Mars but in fact, Gabriella’s Carbon Black series is based at Sevalco, a carbon black plant in the suburb of Avonmouth. She documented what happened to the plant after it closed. Worth a look.

Luke S Ball

Luke’s photography sparks debate. From alcoholics to amateur fighters, Luke chooses a subject and sticks with it. For the last two years he’s been studying for a BA in Documentary Photography at the University of Wales in Newport. He was recently selected as one of four photographers to represent the UK in a project known as Sporting Nations, for which he travelled to Argentina to follow a local group of free runners.
