Pick 'n' Mix

Pick 'n' Mix

By hattie- IdeasTap 01/10/10

Hattie Hawksworth will be bringing you stuff from the world wide web, every week...

We figured that the internet’s pretty good for picking up titbits that make you look fresh/bangin’/rad (delete where appropriate) in front of your friends and potential conquests.

Which is why I’ve taken it on my shoulders to bring you a weekly page of stuff that you’d only find if you spent six days trawling obscure art blogs and fan sites of mid-90s girl bands. Hey – I go there so you don’t have to. It’s cultural Smash.

So here’s this week’s bag of treats. It’s a mix, so while you may not like lemon and lime (urrrgh), there’ll always be some orange and strawberry in there too…

Clinic (the best poetry/music/illustration blog EVER)

We LOVE Clinic. Fresh out of New Cross, this group started out by offering critiques of their mates’ poems – they were mostly literature students at Goldsmiths, so they liked words. It grew, and soon they were regularly cramming the Amersham Arms, in South London while Dazed and Confused said, “Clinic put on London's sickest poetry nights."

They got their biz together and did an anthology with some brilliant poets and illustrators – you can buy it here. The good news is that we are currently planning a MASSIVE poetry brief with Clinic, so if you’re a budding poet, watch out for that one.

Most importantly, they have the best eye for poetry. If you don’t believe me, check out this little gem they recently picked out by Sam Willetts – there are no words… Apart from his.

En Vogue are back

Yes that’s right. If you don’t know who they are, they’re the feisty girl band that owned 1996 with “Don’t Let Go.” You do know that song. They’re playing in October get tickets here; I’ll be there…

TEN photographs

Photography collective Fourteen-Nineteen won our Innovators Fund and now they’ve teamed up with amazing blog Holy Ghost to form TEN. Curated by a new individual every fortnight, it’s like 10 pages from the best sketchbook you’ve ever seen, but online.

Mercy Midnight Specials at Liverpool Biennial

Living in London, it’s not often that you’ll raise your fist to the sky and wonder why the hell you’re not somewhere where really cool stuff happens. This is how I felt when I heard about Mercy’s midnight specials for Liverpool Biennial.

Mercy is a really exciting creative agency doing everything from graphic design, art direction and advertising, they also put on nights and produce a lovely zine.

I’m especially interested in Destroy all Linguists on 23 October at the Cooperative in Liverpool with none other than the original poetry boy band Aisle 16.

Photography scout

I’m going to try and bring you a few shots from a photographer I love every week.

This week it’s Matthias Heiderich. Berlin, overexposure and candy-coloured buildings – what’s not to love?
