The Sound Mind Project

BREAKING SILENCE ON MENTAL HEALTH

The Sound Mind Project is a campaign focused on promoting mental well being and fighting the stigma surrounding mental illness. There are different contributing factors to the prejudices people have towards mental illness, one of them being negative depictions of people suffering from mental illness in the mainstream media. This kind of stigma perpetuates a culture of silence and shame, when in fact statistics show that a staggering 1 in 4 people will suffer from some degree of mental illness at some point during their life. We feel now is the time for these issues to be brought to the forefront of national discussion. By developing stimulating live shows and creating entertaining but accurate films/videos we hope to encourage a greater awareness of mental health.

LAUNCH CONCERT

In recognition of WMHD in October, we are staging an exciting concert, bringing together the best musicians, artists and dancers to raise awareness of mental health, particularly in regards to young people. The event will be held at the Birmingham O2 Academy on the 22nd of October and will symbolise unity and active participation in affecting serious change in attitudes towards mental health. Campaigner Jermaine Pinnock is teaming up with BSMHFT ( Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health foundation trust) and O2 to reverse the effects of stigma which is sadly often perpetuated by the arts/entertainment industry.

Through a unique blend of UK talent, the event will demonstrate the power of artistic expression in bringing about change and also highlight the therapeutic qualities of performance. Our number one aim is to raise awareness of mental health and promote well being, but to do it through fun and entertaining means. This event will be the first of many concerts that will promote national consciousness, encourage active participation and highlight networks of support.
