Hi, Vince. It's potentially a huge debate (a night in a pub would be a good place to kick one off) but I think the clearest indication of a problem was a German gallery (Hanover? maybe Cologne) who put together an exhibition of photography in year 2000.
It was a round-up of significant photography from throughout the medium's 160 year history - there were no 20th Century British photographer included! Zero. BTW Julia Margaret Cameron was in, though and one other 19th Century photographer, I can't remember who, though. I can deffo think of two or three from the 20th Century that maybe should/could have been included but I doubt the curators were deliberately biased so what was the implication?
In my opinion this country was indisposed to seeing photography as art in so many ways, and there was a consequence of that.
I think when Adam replies with the never-ending "f**king obsession with drawing a distinction" it's may be because he's been asked that kind of patronising question too many times. Was it ever asked in those countries that 'just got on with it', if so it didn't stop people exploring the potential of what was possible through photography.
I'm not banging on cos of being particularly a fan of Adam and Olly but increasingly like what they are doing and where they might be headed.
What's your take, Vince?
