I completed a BA Hons in English and Creative Writing at Strathclyde last year and would say that the jury's still out for me too.
It did help me to learn different techniques that I wouldn't otherwise have tried. The course reading list exposed me to writers that I wouldn't have picked off the shelf but have learnt so much from and come to love. Similarly, just being in a class full of writers can be inspiring and insightful and the work produced, in my experience, was so varied.
Also, going to university, no matter what you study, gives you a lot of opportunities to write and get your writing published, such as the uni paper. For me this was one of the most rewarding things.
Still, if the tutor has a rigid idea of what makes for a good piece of writing, and it is not the style you naturally take to, it can be disheartening and frustrating.
It's just a shame it doesn't often lead to many related jobs, come graduation. A year on I am still working in a shop for minimum wage!
