1ee0c387-701e-4daa-a982-a2f900f7f510After reading the play several times, a very useful way to start getting into the detail of a role (without becoming over-prepared, or making too many decisions) is to make three lists: what the character says about themselves; what other people say about the character; and what the character says about other people. When it comes down to it, these are the biggest clues the writer has given you into who the character is, and what they want from the other people in the play.
This can be a huge piece of work for a major character - so start early! But it pays off hugely.
